08b / Opera: The Tragedy of Werther

The Tragedy of Werther

On 5 December tenor Stéfan Louw will be producing yet another mini-opera at the Roodepoort Theatre:  The Tragedy of Werther.

An adaptation of the music from Werther (Massenet) and text from The sorrows of young Werther (Goethe) comes together in a two-act opera that is long enough to tell the complete story of the young poet’s life but short enough to capture the attention of opera connoisseur and new-comer alike.

The role of Werther will be performed by Louw himself with mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Lombard in the role of his lover, Charlotte.  They will be accompanied by a narrator and the ever-faithful orchestra in the form of pianist Eugene Joubert.

This one-show only performance starts at 20:00 and tickets are available from the Joburg City Theatre’s ticketing line (0861 670 670) at R120 each.

Stéfan Louw is a professional tenor who earns his living by singing opera in South Africa and abroad.  He made his debut at the Pretoria State Theatre in 1999, when he was only 25, and received the prestigious FNB Vita Opera Award for Best Newcomer in Opera for that production.  With more than 30 full opera productions behind his name, Louw is a well-known face on opera stages and also a regular contributor to Citizen’s Citivibe with his column, OperaSmalls.
