INTERESTING HISTORICAL DATES FROM THE PAST

DECEMBER
21 December 1936: Adam Small, Afrikaans writer and dramatist, Verse van die Liefde, 1957, Kanna Hy Ko Hystoe, studied at the Universities of Cape Town, Oxford and London. He also held the position of Head of the Department of social work at the University of the Western Cape.
13 December 1906 : Lourens van der Post (Sir in later years), author - The Heart of the Hunter 1961, The Lost World of the Kalahari 1958. He also wrote of his time when he served in the second world war in Africa, Burma and Indonesia. He was held a prisoner of war in a Japanese camp.
JANUARY
21 January 1918 : Frederick Guy Butler, author, poet studied at the universities of Rhodes and Oxford. He was the original editor of the Oxford A Book of South African Verse; When Boys were Men 1969, The 1820 Settlers 1974.
22 January 1959: James Phillips singer, song writer, musician, Together with Lee Edwards formed Cherry Faced Lurchers which went on to become “a prominent and relevant” rock band of the 1980s in South Africa. He died, in 1995, in a motor car accident.
