12 August 1928 Fatima Meer academic, human rights activist and writer: Portrait of Indian South Africans, Passive Resistance, Higher than Hope.

20 August 2013 On this date the well known voice of vocalist and composer Sathima Bea Benjamin came to an end. She had been born in Claremont, Cape Town in 1936 and eventually spent nearly forty five years in New York. In October 2004 she received the order of Ikhamanga from then President of South Africa,Thabo Mbeki. This was in recognition of her work as a South African and international jazz artist
