Peculiarities of the English Language Dr Dawn Gould

ENGLISH  spelling or the sound of some words with different meanings  may, at times,  be difficult  for  new comers to the language.   For example:

BAT:  a heavy stick / a flattish club OR a BAT meaning a flying mammal OR BAT to flutter an eyelid

TEAR:   Either a drop of liquid from the eye OR TEAR to rend, to cause pain

NIGHT:   a rank, to gain the title Sir OR NIGHT the end of a day                                                                                 

ADDRESS:  where one lives OR ADDRESS:  to speak directly                                                                               

REIGN: the rule of a monarch OR RAIN: the liquid that falls from the sky                                                                                 

 WORN showing effect of wear OR  WARN: of danger, to forbid
