Consider words such as : cardiology – medical study of the heart, conchology – the study of shells and molluscs, dermatology – medical study of the skin and skin diseases, ornithology – scientific study of birds, etymology – the study of words and their development, psychology – the scientific study of the mind , musicology – the study of music
One notices immediately that all have the same ending- ology / logy . In recent times because knowledge and science have made such tremendous advances they have needed to be divided into many different branches. This has resulted in our seeing more and more words with these very specific endings. What is the origin of these endings?
The English language is made up of different other languages so for an answer one must follow a long path back in time and find that ology or logy comes via Latin and the ancient Greek word logos – meaning A WORD!
