VALENTINE’S DAY:   myth or fact?

OR    –     A hugely successful, commercially manipulated, spending spree?  Dr Dawn Gould

There are various explanations for the idea of a specific day to commemorate romance. Perhaps the Roman festival of fertility, Lupercalia, was involved.  Geoffrey Chaucer, in the 14th century, wrote a courtly love poem when Richard 11 of England became engaged to Anne of Bohemia.  By the 18th century expressions of love were reflected in the giving of flowers, sweets of different kinds and handwritten messages. Mass production of cards came about in the 19th century with heart shapes and Cupid figures being prominent.   February 14th will nevertheless be welcomed by many who appreciate the possible sincere show of affection and care, despite the history being somewhat unclear.

Editors note:    With Valentine’s Day coming up I really have no need for cards – Chocolates will do just fine.  Chocolate is my source of energy – that is my story and I am sticking to it.
