Artist Talk Series
Every First Friday of the Month: 1 March – 5 July 2019
In partnership with Goethe-Institut South Africa, as part of the Goethe-Institute Project Space (GPS), Afropolitan Explosiv will be delivering the Artist Talk Series, from the 1st of March – 5th of July 2019.
Goethe-Institut, a German Cultural Development institution, has agreed to support Afropolitan Explosiv, who will host professional artists on the first Friday of each month, in a short performance/demonstration & public conversation, where they get to speak about their artistic practice. The interaction responds to questions such as: formal education (where did they study), income opportunities (how do they sustain their art), sources of inspiration (how does their work link with current trends, other cultures & eras).
The series takes place at Afropolitan Explosiv’s Creative Hub, Newcastle CBD, KZN.
We would like to give young artists in the community of Amajuba an opportunity to interact and learn from experienced artists from all walks of life. So that as they are making decisions about their art (and practice) they do so having been exposed to as diverse a range as the limits of human invention today can allow.
The objective is not so much for the visiting artist to teach the target audience technical skills, but rather to expand the scope in terms of imaginative potential of the young people.
What you will find in the target audience is that many of them aspire for similar creative paths (eg: To be a House DJ or Rapper, or Actor on the Soapie Uzalo). This is simply because that is what they are exposed to on a daily basis.
Initiative bringing together the superstars of the arts industry, plus high profile guests from public institutions.
Promoting the tourism and creative industries for people in the district of Amajuba (Newcastle, Utrecht, Dannhauser), as a viable avenue for employment and business enterprising.
Our aggressive digital activations and social media penetration extends the impact beyond the event itself, bringing the experience to people’s homes, to their cellphones—which guarantees a lasting experience.
The Series is managed by Dr Thokozani Mhlambi—cultural innovator, cellist and composer of music (0658109452). Mhlambi has over 10 years experience in delivering transformative and inclusive cultural events, both locally and internationally, that bring maximum exposure through simple and effective channels. He executed work for big entities such as Tsogo Sun, KZN Film Commission, Nelson Mandela Foundation, Luthuli Museum, to mention a few.
