Jungle has been facilitating the Muizenberg Performing Arts Club from the start of this year for children aged between 9 – 13 years from diverse backgrounds.
During the sessions, facilitated by Jungle’s Artistic Director Vincent Meyburgh and theatre maker Ntombifuthi Mkhasibe, assisted by Naledi Tlailane, the children explore all aspects of creating and performing the Jungle style of theatre based on African folktales.
Throughout the year the children were introduced to storytelling; mime and music; the use of masks and dance. This final and fourth term saw the children bringing it all together for a public performance at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg on Wednesday 29 November 2017. This event was open to the public and was MC-ed by George Mkhululi Smith from the Blacksmith Entertainment Company. At this event Jungle also performed a preview of their show The Magic Shell.
The Magic Shell is interactive storytelling theatre for young children and their families. It illustrates the value of African culture, wild life conservation, inspires reading and builds creative arts skills.
The Magic Shellis based on an African folktale and set in ancient times on the Wild coast. The story starts in a time before people had any stories to tell. A husband and his wife have many children but no stories to tell them. She decides to go on a journey to find stories leaving him to look after the home and the children. On her adventure she learns from various comical wild animals; she is challenged to be brave and determined and to find stories in surprizing places. The story comes to life in English and isiXhosa with original songs and innovative masks.
The Magic Shell explores how stories come from our connection to nature and the spiritual world. It encourages children to tell imaginative stories and to read. This work has value because it fosters pride in our heritage and language, connects us to nature, brings laughter and opens up channels of creativity.
