MEANINGS OF ENGLISH WORDS – PITFALLS ALONG THE WAY

Learning a language has pitfalls along the way.  This was made clear recently when the meaning of two words were discussed.   CRUTCH    and   CHIT

CRUTCH : a walking support placed under the arm when needed either permanently or  for a short recovery period.    OR  used by someone who has difficulty in facing a problem.

CHIT :  a bill one signs for and pays at a later date.  OR a female child OR  CHIT  to cause to sprout –   as when potatoes show signs of growth they are chitting.
