One some times hears the statement : “Learning to spell English words is difficult” . This might be true but it should be remembered that WORDS and the ability to SPELL and understand them forms the fascination of a language.
Having been involved for thirteen years in the organizing of a Spelling Bee for children in grades 6 and 7 this aspect did arise. Various letters of the alphabet caused frowns to appear on young faces as they struggled with which letter was to be used to spell the word.
The sound of the words beginning with Ks: knock, knave, knot, know and Qs quill, quack, quail, quiver, caused difficulties. To overcome spelling difficulties a suggestion is, to read as much as possible to become familiar with words and to have a dictionary near by to aid one.
