JOHN TENGO JABAVU b 11 January 1859 d. 10 September 1921. A political activist he would become in 1876 editor of the first newspaper – Isigidmi samaxhosa – in South Africa to be written in the Xhosa language. He also strongly advocated women’s rights and education. In 1884 he founded the newspaper Imvo Zababtsundu (Black opinion)
